CSR projects of the Plopsa Group

As a theme park group, we want to be more than just a great day out for families and children. We want all our visitors to have a great experience in a sustainable environment. As a company, we try to make a difference for our employees, visitors as well as for future generations by making sustainable choices.

Voka Charter Sustainable Business

In 2022, the Plopsa Group stepped into the Sustainable Business Charter of VOKA (Chamber of Commerce). Specifically, Plopsa is taking the step of becoming a sustainability pioneer based on the 17 sustainability objectives of the united nations. In concrete terms, this means that each year for five years we will put forward 10 specific actions linked to one of the 17 sustainability objectives. In this way, the Plopsa Group aims to achieve the SDG Pioneer Certificate. You can read more about our sustainability actions below.

Sustainability action plan

Our sustainability action plan is linked to the 17 sustainability goals of the united nations. Most actions can be linked to multiple SDGs. But for the action plan, only the main target was retained. You can find a brief overview of the actions we launched last year here:

Waste islands behind the scenes

To help our employees sort even better, we set up waste islands at strategic locations. Here, all employees can dispose of different types of waste. It is a similar system to the bins you can find in the stations. We focus on the selective collection of PMD, paper and cardboard, organic waste and residual waste. But we have also had separate collection points for electronics, batteries, green waste and surplus food from our catering outlets for several years now. With these waste islands, we hope to raise the company's recycling rate even higher and thus be able to recycle even more waste.

Giving away revenue and operating funds

Through various means, we try to support several charities with our proceeds. We do this in a few different ways. For example, we support individual charities such as Move For Life, Make-A-Wish, Everyone Deserves Holidays and so many others. Besides individual charities, we also participate in Trooper. That is a platform where various local associations can earn an extra penny from sales through their platform. For every ticket sold through their platform, Plopsa donates a piece of the proceeds to that association. A win-win for both parties.

Valorising lost property for the benefit of charities

A lot of items are unfortunately left behind after visiting one of our parks. When we fail to find the owners after a while or the lost items are not collected, we collect them to donate to charity. For instance, clothes and similar items are collected for various poverty organisations near our parks and electronics are collected for the Cliniclowns.

Educational partnership with defence and emergency services

During the Police Band Days, our visitors could enjoy various demonstrations by Police, Fire Brigade, the White Yellow Cross and Defence. In this way, we not only introduce children to the various emergency services disciplines, but also bring them closer together. Our visitors were given a lot of information on how the disciplines work and what exactly the emergency services can do for them.

Additional solar panels on various sites

Over the years, we have already made many efforts to generate our own sustainable green electricity. However, we are taking this effort one step further by doubling our solar panel capacity. Additional solar panels will be installed on our Plopsaland De Panne, Plopsaland Village, Plopsaqua Landen-Hannuit and Plopsa Coo Ardennes sites. With these, we are trying to meet our increasing need for electricity ourselves and generate energy in a sustainable way.

Educational offer for school trips

Commitment to quality education is one of the 17 UN sustainability goals. To further pursue this, we have several sustainability panels in our queues together with Eneco. We also commit to different types of ‘classes’ in our parks. For instance, we have spread across all our sites: energy classes, traffic classes, farm classes, bee classes and dino classes. We use this offer mainly for our youngest visitors, but we also work closely with various colleges and universities to help train young people and offer them the chance to take an instructive internship within our magical Plopsa classes. This also includes training our staff on Plopsa's sustainability policy.

Own water treatment plants

At our sites in De Panne, Landen-Hannuit and Holiday Park Germany, we have built our own water treatment plants. Thanks to these installations, we have already purified 25 000m³ of water ourselves, which we can reuse in our parks. In this way, we reduce our primary water consumption and relieve the burden on local water treatment plants. Our plants remove organic pollution load, nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. Thus, we are fully committed to water treatment and quality and reduce our ecological footprint even further.

Our other sustainable initiatives

Further inspired by our Plopsa for Nature & Plopsa for People initiatives, we as a company have already set up many initiatives to make our business more sustainable and focus on a quality living environment for people and animals.

Cogeneration

The natural gas-powered cogeneration system generates heat and electricity continuously and simultaneously, leading to optimal energy savings and efficiency. To make this happen, we cooperate with heating specialist Remeha. Thanks to these efforts, we are lowering our energy consumption and reducing our CO2 emissions by as much as 474 tonnes. That is equivalent to the consumption of no less than 120 Belgian families! In this way, we want to contribute to achieving the European climate objectives. We use these installations in all our water parks in order to further increase the energy efficiency of our parks and eventually evolve towards an energy-neutral site.

Durable water dispensers

In the parks' offices and backstage area, too, Plopsa is fully committed to sustainability. For example, sustainable water dispensers were installed in cooperation with BRITA. One litre of BRITA filtered water produces up to 25 times less C02 than one litre of bottled water. Moreover, a company with 100 employees can save more than 506 kg of plastic waste per year by using a BRITA dispenser. In this way, Plopsa, together with its employees and BRITA, is reducing its ecological footprint. Will you join Plopsa in opting for a sustainable BRITA solution?

Public transport

The Plopsa parks are perfectly accessible by public transport, so we encourage visitors to take the train, tram or bus. In collaboration with SNCB and De Lijn, we therefore offer super-cheap combined tickets valid for a return trip. Because sustainable travel is not only good for the environment and the climate, it also reduces the pressure on the environments where our parks are located and reserves space for local residents. Also, travelling by public transport is safer than private cars.

Smoking ban

Smoking is banned in all Plopsa parks. In this way, the Plopsa Group wants to contribute to a healthy lifestyle and the comfort of its visitors. We are also studying the impact of making our other parks completely smoke-free, similar to some foreign examples, including joining the #GenerationSmokingFree charter.

Beyond The Moon

Beyond The Moon aims to give families with a seriously ill child a break from their daily lives by giving them an unforgettable holiday experience. Plopsa supports this initiative, annually welcoming a number of families through Beyond The Moon for a magical stay at the Plopsaland Resort.

Giving away food

A lot of food is processed within the Plopsa parks. When certain foods approach their expiry date, we donate them away to local food banks. This way, we avoid having to throw food away and can provide extra support to people in poverty. To minimise the loss of edibles, we also annually process our pumpkins that decorate our park during Halloween into delicious soup. We then donate these to various local organisations such as residential care homes, soup kitchens and various other organisations working against poverty.
